Yusef Salaam had been wrongly sentenced, along with four other teenagers, to a long prison term for the rape of a young woman in 1989. The four young African Americans and one Hispanic were cleared in 2002. The 49-year-old won the Democratic primary on Wednesday and is expected to join the New York City Council in the fall.
