Sergei Khadzhikurbanov was convicted of killing journalist Anna Politkovskaya in 2006. The Kremlin has acknowledged the use of prisoner recruits to fight in Ukraine and said convicts who 'atone for their crime on the battlefield with blood' could be pardoned.
